Last Summer
Last Summer shows reality distorted by the state of war through the eyes of a teenager. Sergei Sorokopud is a sensitive, 16 years old boy injured during Russian Invasion on Ukraine. The boy lives with his family in Yahidne, village located 20 km from Ukrainian-Belarusian border. Film portrays Sergei’s seemingly carefree years before coming of age. End of adolescence means a possible call up to Ukrainian army and a ban on leaving the country. In Sergei’s life, war is intertwined with affection for loved ones. Sergei’s teenager friends, who were previously held by force in a school basement, have created a special kind of bond between each other. Their physical closeness and tenderness blurs and transforms into violence. The games they play often exceed the limits of pain. Conversations between Sergei and his sister create a refrain to which the film returns. A family discussion about the boy's future comes up in their culmination and causes conflict. We expect an open-ended, emotional ending to come.
Realization: Jan Jurczak, Eleanora Iadkouskaya
